To combat this enemy of innovation, a critical balance is required. In this series, Ron Price examines the 12 enemies of successful innovation. Enemy #3 is a lack of urgency.

Episode Transcript:

Enemy number three keeping us from successful innovation is a lack of urgency. Now, this is a tricky one. Because on the one hand, innovation is time-bound. Our customers have needs they want met today, they have problems they want solved on their terms when they’re ready, rather than when we are. So, these opportunities don’t last forever. At the same time, we have to be careful that we don’t rush to judgment. That we don’t create solutions without understanding problems, that we don’t deploy those solutions without verifying them in the marketplace. So, there’s an interesting tension between doing things well and avoiding a lack of urgency. When you learn how to balance those two factors, you have a much greater chance at being successful with innovation. Because it’s not just about doing the right things, it’s about getting the right things done the right way at the right time in order to be successful with innovation. So, enemy number three of successful innovation is lack of urgency.
