Episode Transcript
I’m Dr. Jeremy Graves. Today, we have a question: how does the multi-generational workplace impact the way we innovate? There are many facets within the multi-generational workplace that can both hinder or enhance innovation. For instance, some within an older generation may not embrace technology at the same rate as those from a younger generation. This can lead to a fear from some that their job is in jeopardy if they don’t start acting more like another generation. Whenever fear becomes a motivator, innovation is hindered. Likewise, some within a younger generation find themselves intimidated by those who have more business experience. This too can lead to a lack of sharing ideas and inhibit the innovative process. On the flip side, when multiple generations find ways to share ideas, learn from one another, and see the world through another generation’s eyes, then innovation takes on a whole new approach. Generations tend to see the world differently through things like generational upbringing, values, significant events, and defining moments. These all play a factor in how we innovate. Finding ways to have frank discussions will allow multiple generations to bring their best to the table, which allows us all the opportunity to innovate together—and together is always better. Until next time, keep innovating.
