Dr. David Pate shares his thoughts on the need for innovation in healthcare. For him, disruptive innovation is a must for the future of healthcare.

Video Transcript:

Well, innovation’s got to play a huge role in healthcare because it does in any industry that costs too much and produces inconsistent quality. There’s going to be disruption if you don’t innovate, so better to innovate and get ahead of the disruption. Some of the obstacles to innovation in healthcare are, first of all, the regulatory environment that prescribes what we have to do and in some cases how we have to do it. I think the complexity, the regulatory environment, those are kind of the obstacles to innovation.

We really have a crisis of affordability. On top of that, healthcare is very inconsistent across the United States, and people don’t have a full appreciation for the fact that what door you go through could determine your survival and complication rate. And so with the inconsistency in quality and the high cost, the field has to be innovated, it has to be disrupted to make healthcare more consistently high quality and lower cost. Otherwise, it’s going to continue to spiral out of control to unaffordable and won’t serve the people.
