Chief Innovation Officer at Better Business Bureau Great West + Pacific Dale Dixon provides tips on how to ideate.

Episode Transcript

Dale Dixon here, I am the Chief Innovation Officer for Better Business Bureau Northwest + Pacific. How do I get into a position of being able to have great ideas? Thomas Edison figured it out. When he needed to come up with new ideas, he would sit in a rocking chair with pie plates on the floor, upside down, hanging over the edges of the rocking chair with a steel ball in each hand. What happens if you relax too much? You drop that steel ball—it makes a lot of noise. Most importantly, he was ideating—coming up with new ideas. What does that look like? So, he knew he had to get into a very relaxed state. When do you do your best thinking? It’s when you’re most relaxed, so purposefully find opportunities to relax.
