Chief Innovation Officer at Better Business Bureau Great West + Pacific Dale Dixon dives into the brain science behind stress triggers and how they translate in the workplace.

Episode Transcript

Dale Dixon here, I am the Chief Innovation Officer for Better Business Bureau Northwest + Pacific. I love looking at brain science, especially its impact on how we innovate and come up with new ideas. Did you know that it takes very little for you to go into cortical arousal? That means cortisol starts popping through your brain, and when that happens, blood rushes to the extremities so that it gets you ready for a fight or flight scenario because it’s stress and your brain is saying you have to escape the sabertooth tiger. In a cyber age, how do we counter that and get ourselves out of that? First and foremost, you have to be aware that it takes very little stress. You’ve got to be able to realize that when that type of just small pressure presents itself in your day-to-day work, it’s going to create enough stress to trigger a chemical response in your brain that creates a less than optimal situation for you to come up with new ideas. So, you’ve got to be aware that that is happening day in and day out. How do we reverse that and get into a position of being able to have great ideas? The next episode of this podcast will dive into that!
