In the final episode of this series, Dr. Evans Baiya addresses different corporate excuses and mindsets that hinder our ability to innovate successfully—even when you believe innovation cannot happen in your industry.

Episode Transcript:

How come you are not innovating? You actually have to address corporate innovation excuses and mindsets. The next one is, “Innovation and change and growth don’t work in my industry.” Another way I hear it is, “I work for a very bureaucratic company, I work for government, and because of that we are highly regulated and therefore we cannot innovate.”

I understand! There are some industries that have a quite a bit of restrictions. Sometimes you have some limitations. But that doesn’t mean you cannot create new value. You have the opportunity to make better services for the public for example. So, there’s no excuse or limits on your ability to create value for your internal and external constituents. So, “This doesn’t work in my industry” is truly an excuse, and that excuse, typically, is implanted with the mindset of the leadership and therefore we need to change the leadership mindset. And it takes some time for that to happen, but it must happen if you are going to grow because I’ve seen old industries convert themselves and become really powerful industries as they grow because of changing their mindset.
