In this series, Dr. Evans Baiya addresses different corporate excuses and mindsets that hinder our ability to innovate successfully. One of the most common excuses? “It’s not my job to innovate.”

Episode Transcript:

How come you are not innovating? We actually have to address corporate innovation excuses and mindsets, in this case in your organization. Every organization has reasons why it doesn’t innovate as well. So, what are some of those excuses?

It is not my job to innovate. That is a big one, I hear this all the time. It’s not my job to innovate. You can’t say innovation is not your job—you have problems where you sit every day. You should be innovating now. So, when you say, “It’s not my job,” you are basically saying, “It’s not my responsibility to solve my own problems.”

We need to address that. And if people feel that it’s not their job to address their own problems, then we have a big mindset shift that is required in the organization. Everybody has problems where they work, they have problems either at the technical level or organizational level or department level. They need to be addressing those problems. They need to own them, right? So, that is one that I hear all the time, it’s not my job.
